Marja=berry

Kalevala - Canto 50: The Marjatta cycle: An allegory of the Christianizarion of Finland. Maid Marjatta falls pregnant after eating a lingonberry (marja - Finnish for berry- is a reference to Maria). She gives birth to a son. Since the son has been born out of wedlock, Väinämöinen sentences him to be killed. The infant boy then begins to speak and demands Ukko as his judge. After the infant has witnessed sad details of Väinämöinen's own past and of Väinämöinen's own culpability, Ukko declares the young infant boy as the King of Karelia. In the end Väinämöinen exits the material world, but leaves his kantele (symbol for poetry and literary arts) as heirloom for Finns.

Where is everyone?

What happens to South African artist if dropped in the middle of Finnish farmland with a crochet needle, circle knitting pens, one blue marker, glue, scissors and one chisel?

I admit, this is a self-styled experiment. I was curious how I would react to 2 months isolated in a foreign landscape.

Draw, walk, knit, eat lingonberries, eat smoked salmon, eat hard dark rye bread that exhausts your jaw muscles, make sauna, draw, crochet, watch Finnish television, use kiitos, hyvaa, no nii in every conversation, count to ten silently and recite the days of the week in Finnish.

There is a wood fired sauna here. The highlight of my day is to build the fire for the sauna - and see how hot I can get it. Personal best: 115°C.

I have, for some time, been chopping at a piece of pine I picked up in the sauna house´s wood store. I now have little sculpture that looks like a maimed russian doll. I am starting on another piece. It is birch this time. It smells wonderful when you cut into the wood.

kalevala act 1 - Ice dipping

The Kalevala is an epic poem compiled in the nineteenth century from Finnish folklore. Väinämöinen´s search for a wife is a central element in many stories, though he never finds one. One of the brides, Aino, drowns herself instead of marrying him. Her brother, having lost a singing contest to Väinämöinen, promised Aino's "hands and feet" in marriage if Väinämöinen would save him from drowning in the swamp into which Joukahainen had been thrown. Rather than submit to this fate, Aino walks into the sea. However, she returns to taunt Väinämöinen as a shapeshifting water spirit. The name Aino means "only". In the original poems she was mentioned as the "only daughter" (aino tytti). 60 000 women in Finland has been named Aino.
